Hold the side button on a new Samsung Galaxy and Google's Gemini answers you. Ask Samsung's browser to summarize a page, and you get Browsing Assist, which runs on Perplexity.

Say "Bixby" and a different conversational agent wakes up, one that also calls Perplexity APIs for live web search. Galaxy AI is hovering over all of it.

That's four AIs in one phone, elbowing each other to do the same job. Samsung will duplicate anything before it lets one company run its hardware.

As corporate defense, the logic holds up, but for the person who just paid four figures for a flagship, it's a daily source of confusion.

Every core function on a Galaxy has two owners

Open the app drawer on a fresh Galaxy, and you're looking at two phones sharing one piece of hardware. Nearly every core system function has two owners competing for your attention.

Different jobs go to different giants, and no one gets the whole operating system. Google gets the tasks Samsung stopped trying to win.

For example, in July 2026, Samsung shut down Samsung Messages for US users and pushed everyone to Google Messages.

Samsung also gave the default long-press of the side button to Gemini after years of saving it for Bixby. That handover wasn't a gift, either.

Testimony in the DOJ's search remedies trial in April 2025 revealed Google pays Samsung an "enormous sum" every month to preinstall Gemini.

Microsoft got the plumbing Samsung chose not to build. Link to Windows is baked into One UI, the Office bundle ships on board, and for years Samsung leaned on OneDrive to handle native Gallery photo backups.

Yes, the sync integration ends soon now that Samsung wants its own cloud, but I'd call that a solid five years of letting Microsoft carry the backend load.

Flexibility stops cold at anything touching Samsung hardware or ecosystem retention. Pull out the S Pen, and the native stylus features route to Samsung Notes.

Plug into a monitor, and DeX takes over as the desktop environment. Those are the spaces that keep people buying Samsung hardware, and Samsung isn't giving them up.

Two of everything beats none of anything

Samsung had already tried to build its way out of Android with Tizen, and the effort never attracted developers.

Then the industry watched the US government cut Huawei off from Google Mobile Services. Without the Play Store and Google's app suite, one of the biggest phone makers on earth disappeared from the West.

I'd argue the duplicate stack is survival insurance. If the Google relationship sours or regulators intervene, Samsung has a working alternative for most of the basics.

Samsung also needs the Galaxy Store to sell apps in enormous markets where Google isn't available, so that redundancy also keeps the company standing if geopolitics turns.

Two backups, two syncs, twice the notifications

Samsung protects itself, and you get the inconvenience. Choice helps, up to a point. Samsung Browser (formerly Samsung Internet) blocks trackers by default, while Chrome is built around data collection for Google.

Beyond that, extra options only wear you down. Too many choices dull our thinking and leave people less satisfied with what they picked.

A phone should absorb small decisions for me, not hand them back. A Galaxy hands a pile of them back. All that overlap also makes things cluttered.

Your first week with a new Galaxy goes to shutting off redundant alerts and untangling contact syncing that somehow ran twice.

Nothing in the setup ever asks you to pick a lane and stick to it.

One fix you can make and one Samsung should

You can't rewrite the software, but you can fix the configuration. If you hop between Android brands, default to the Google apps. Your data follows you.

If you own a Galaxy Watch and a Galaxy Book, default to Samsung's apps, because that's where the hardware features are, and mixing them is how you end up with photos in two places and passwords in neither.

Samsung could fix this easily at first boot. One screen during setup asks users which ecosystem they want to lead with, and One UI hides the other side's duplicates.

I don't think that's a lot to ask of a company that ships this much software.
