Samsung has a formula for its Fan Edition phones. Samsung starts with a phone that passes for a flagship, then hollows out the middle until the price lands at $650.

The Samsung Galaxy S26 FE is the most recent attempt, except this one lands at $700, a $50 jump over the last three Fan Editions.

On paper, I'm already sold. A 6.7-inch display, the new Exynos 2500, and seven years of software updates sound like a phone you hang onto until the end of the decade, right?

But when you get to the fine print, the deal starts to sour. Plenty of what's been cut is the usual mid-range triage, and I can't argue with those decisions.

A few other casualties on the list, though, really bother me.

Skimping on RAM right when AI needs more of it

8GB of RAM is 4GB short of this year's AI

Every storage configuration of the Galaxy S26 FE tops out at 8GB of memory. A few years ago, that was a fine baseline for a mid-range Android phone.

Now it's the device's biggest limitation.

Google's Gemini Intelligence suite runs local processing on Gemini Nano v3, and Google's published requirements start at 12GB of RAM.

With 8GB, the S26 FE falls short of that floor, which means those features either run through the cloud-based Gemini app or don't show up on the phone.

Seven years of OS upgrades sounds generous until you realize the hardware can't run 2026's headline on-device AI features on launch day.

Shorter battery lifespan than the S25 FE

A full day today, a shorter one in two years

The 4,900mAh cell gets you through a day without drama. How many days it keeps doing that is the problem.

The European Product Registry for Energy Labeling filings tell the story Samsung's marketing doesn't. The Galaxy S25 FE was rated for 2,000 full charge cycles before dropping below 80% health.

The S26 FE is certified for 1,200 cycles against the same threshold. That's a 40% reduction in the rated battery lifespan versus the phone it replaces.

If you charge a lot, you'll probably see capacity and battery health slide sooner than you would have on last year's model.

385 pixels per inch is where fine text starts to blur

The panel is 6.7 inches, the same size Samsung has used on the last two Fan Editions, because nothing sells a phone in a display case like a big screen.

The resolution hasn't moved either, and it's still 1080x2340. At 6.7 inches, 1080p works out to roughly 385 pixels per inch, which is short of what small text and crisp interface lines need to stay sharp.

If you put it next to the Galaxy S26+, which has the same 6.7-inch footprint but 1440x3120, you can see the difference.

An 8MP telephoto that struggles in low light

Daylight is the only time the zoom lens earns its keep

You get functionally the same camera module as last year's S25 FE, and the 50MP main sensor is good in daylight. Zoom is a different story.

Samsung's 3x optical zoom runs through an 8MP OmniVision OV08A10 sensor measuring 1/4.4 inches.

A sensor that small can't gather much light, so expect grainy, over-processed telephoto shots when you leave daylight behind.

Sure, the camera app lets you zoom to 30x. With no real optical detail to lean on, though, everything turns to mush not far past 3x.

A USB 2.0 port that's slower than last year's

From 5Gbps to 480Mbps in one generation

The S26 FE comes with a USB 2.0 port. Last year's S25 FE had USB 3.2 Gen 1.

That's a drop from 5Gbps to 480Mbps in theoretical bandwidth. Real-world transfer speeds will be under both, but a tenth of the ceiling is still a tenth of the ceiling.

If you move video off the phone over a cable or run local backups to a PC, you'll spend more time staring at a progress bar.

The bigger loss is DisplayPort output, which went out the door with USB 3.2. Wired DeX and video-out to a monitor are gone, and wireless DeX is the only option left.

If you only ever plug that port into a charger, you'll never notice, and this changes nothing for you.

Worse value than the S25 FE and the Pixel 10a

Samsung isn't getting much help from the rest of the market either, and I'd argue the Galaxy S25 FE is the bigger problem.

It has effectively the same cameras, the same charging speed, and a better 2,000-cycle battery rating, and you can find it for around $500 after discounts.

Then there's the Google Pixel 10a, which starts at $500 and puts constant pressure on everything at this price bracket at least until the price rise Google has already warned about arrives.

It doesn't fix the RAM problem, though. It ships with 8GB as well, and its EU label rates the battery for just 1,000 cycles, so its case rests on price.

To be fair, the newer Exynos 2500 is faster and more efficient than the 2400 it replaces. The same EPREL filing that cut the cycle rating also rates the phone for 50 hours of use per charge.

That's up from 42.5 on the S25 FE. If that's enough to sell you on the S26 FE, fair enough. For me, there are better deals out there.
