I've loved my Google TV Streamer 4K, and it's been my main streaming box in our living room for a while.
Although its free TV channel offerings aren't as rich as my Fire TV's, the Android integration is crucial for me. However, it is not a perfect streaming top-box.
I've dealt with occasional lag, and I wasn't sure whether it was due to my unstable connection or a software bug, which at first convinced me my Google TV Streamer was broken.
But after spending many weeks struggling to pinpoint the root cause, I might have finally uncovered what went wrong and how to fix it for good.
I thought my Google TV Streamer was broken
I blamed the internet, but I was wrong
My Google TV Streamer was snappy and fine for the first few weeks, but the longer I used it and the more apps I installed, the more hiccups I experienced.
The problem usually happens on the home hub or when launching from boot to the home screen, where the device didn't resume the last app or TV show.
Some of my apps also got stuck at startup, such as Prime Video and my private VPN provider.
At first, I thought it was because of the sluggish internet at home, but after investigating and comparing it with my Amazon Fire TV 4K Max, I only had the issue on Google's set-top box.
That narrowed it down to the system, and I eventually found the culprit.
But it's not ideal for a low-powered box
Like with most streaming devices, Google TV Streamer offers a modern UI. You'll find rich, dynamic content on the Home tab.
Beyond that, Google serves you recommendations and ads, which add to system processes and a hefty amount of data you download in the background.
Add the accumulated cache and limited memory on your hardware, and that eventually slows down the set-top unit.
These were my main suspects for why my Google TV Streamer setup started acting up.
After tweaking and disabling most of these elements, my hunch proved true. All I can say is I wish I had discovered it sooner.
It's the equivalent of Lite mode on Google TV
While Google TV Streamer offers very little customization on the main home screen beyond rearranging apps, one toggle keeps only the app icons.
It's not easy to find, but it turns out it was the direct fix for the performance woes I experienced.
To access it, open the menu and select Quick Settings > Settings > Accounts & Profile, and then choose your profile. Scroll down and look for Apps only mode.
It's off by default, so turning it on applies the change immediately. You'll need to confirm afterward for it to activate.
When done, your main dashboard will show the installed apps on the home screen in a grid view with medium-sized app icons.
Additionally, on the same page, you can toggle off Autoplay video. It stops clips from playing automatically when you hover over them in the home section or inside an app.
A simpler interface, but far more reliable
Enabling apps-only view hides the Gemini, Live, and dedicated Apps tabs, along with other extra content.
What's great is that most personalized recommendations, including ads, no longer appear in the home hub. Instead, a recommended movie or TV show appears at the top, along with the apps below it.
I appreciate it because it's minimal and lightweight, though there's a little flair in the top banner.
Keep in mind that you lose some features when in apps-only mode. Notably, search and voice search are disabled, so you need to use the remote to run your thumb and type your queries.
The app store shortcut is also hidden, but you can access it from the quick settings panel.
Without the clutter, I felt my Google TV Streamer performed noticeably faster, and content opened faster.
That's because it no longer wastes resources loading ads and autoplay video previews, which are often the real culprits behind slowdowns.
Recover gigabytes of space on your Google TV Streamer
If you still experience performance bottlenecks on your device even with apps-only mode, clearing the app cache might help reclaim storage and improve performance.
To do that, go to Settings > System > Storage > Free up storage > Clear cache, then confirm.
This purges apps' saved temporary data, like thumbnails and clips, but keeps your login credentials and saved passwords intact.
It could also help if you're short on storage space. The more apps you have and the longer you've used them, the more space you can reclaim.
A single toggle saved Google from its own bloated ambitions
If I hadn't discovered this feature, I might still be stuck with my Google TV Streamer's inconsistent performance.
The best part is that I don't need to uninstall my favorite services with these workarounds or dive deep into hidden settings, which can be frustrating and arduous.
Sure, I have to sacrifice some platform features, but I'd rather have a streamer setup that's fast and reliable than flashy marketing tricks that cluttered my screen in the first place.
