Google Translate has saved me so many times. Countless times in foreign countries, I've whipped out my phone and instantly understood what was going on without talking to anyone. Naturally, to keep things in order, I do my best to download any and all language packs I think I will use, so I'm ready at any time, even without a proper internet connection.
However, not every feature is available offline; the most notable is Live Translate. This provides instant translations on your Pixel phone in several ways, making it possible to experience different languages without barriers. It's one of the more vital additions to Translate, and it's now getting a welcome upgrade.
Android Authority reports that the feature is rolling out now and is available in 11 languages to start. That's English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. The news outlet also found a support document that shows the new feature will work with the Pixel 9, 10, and 11.
It's a shame older Pixel devices won't be supported for now, but this has been the case with Google for some time. So, if this is an essential feature for you, and you have an older Pixel phone, it might be a good time to upgrade. Otherwise, you can wait to see whether this feature rolls out to the Pixel 8, 7, and Pixel 6 series phones.
You can use Live Translate with headphones or earbuds with real-time voice translations, take turns speaking through translation, or just have it translate everything to text. The feature is impressive, especially considering how far that tech has come. I remember when translations were abysmal and made absolutely no sense in conversation.
But now, with recent advancements, these translations on the fly are pretty reliable. In fact, it's so good, I've even managed to use them for business matters in Japan with excellent results. Just to be clear, this new offline Live Translate feature will only work with the aforementioned languages and English.
Going forward, you'll no longer have to worry about places having internet or dealing with spotty connections to get your translations completed. We hope that Google will make other features available offline in order to improve the experience and move away from the cloud, especially with the newer hardware that it's releasing.
